BC Provider Registry System

Overview of Service

The Provider Registry System (PRS) development was a joint venture of the Western Health Information Collaborative (WHIC). Release 4 of PRS is now underway as a joint venture between the WHIC partners and Canada Health Infoway Inc. Each of the four western provinces have implemented a Provider Registry within their jurisdiction.
The BC Provider Registry System is a trusted source of information on B.C. health care providers available to authorized users. It currently contains basic profile information on physicians, pharmacists and registered nurses. The source data for this information is from the:

  • College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC,
  • College of Pharmacists of BC,
  • Registered Nurses Association of BC,
  • Medical Services Plan of BC, and
  • Provincial Health Services Authority.

Purpose of Service

Health care organizations use PRS to regularly obtain current, accurate information to update their existing systems.
Organizations can choose to use PRS web-based functionality and/or to develop and implement electronic interfaces, in order to use provider data. The PRS does not replace proprietary systems used to manage provider data held within these organizations.
Functions currently available in PRS include:

  • Maintain Provider - search, view, change and add provider data, and manage duplicate provider records.
  • Maintain Sources and Consumers - search, view, change and record registry users as primary or secondary sources of data, consumers of data or registry administrators.
  • Maintain Consumer Profile Groups - search, view, change and record named sets of data permissions that govern the provider data available to consumers.
  • Query Provider Registry - generate distributions and reports.

Prerequisites for Service

  • Jointly prepare an implementation strategy with the Ministry of Health Registry Administrator.
  • As a Source of data to the BC Provider Registry, negotiate a Memoranda of Understanding with the Ministry.
  • As a Consumer of provider data contained within the BC Provider Registry, negotiate a data sharing agreement with the Source of the data to be consumed.
  • Design, build, and successfully test your interface.
