Susan Adams
Assisted Living Registrar

Susan Adams

Susan Adams is the Assisted Living Registrar. Appointed in November 2003, she is responsible for the administration of the assisted living provisions of the Community Care and Assisted Living Act.

Before becoming the Assisted Living Registrar, Ms. Adams was the Registrar and CEO of the College of Physical Therapists of B.C. In that position she protected the public interest by overseeing the registration of physical therapists who practice in B.C., developing and administering standards of practice and overseeing a complaints process. Ms. Adams has also worked as a management consultant to health-related bodies and professionals, and as the Director of Corporate Services of the College of Dental Surgeons of B.C.

Ms. Adams was called to the Bar in 1987. She worked as a securities lawyer, first in private practice and then at the BC Securities Commission in the Policy and Legislative Division.

Public education about the OALR and the role of assisted living in the housing and care continuum is a key part of the Registrar's duties. To this end, Ms. Adams has visited over 100 assisted living residences across the five health authorities to speak with residents and their families about her role in setting standards, investigating complaints and ensuring resident health and safety. She also speaks frequently about assisted living issues to operator associations, community groups and health authority representatives.
