Ministry of Health

Expert Panels

Expert panels have been widely used in healthcare as a way to bring clinical, administrative and research experts together to examine issues and identify solutions in specific areas. British Columbia has identified expert panels as an important component of the provincial strategy.

To date, the Ministry of Health has hosted three time-limited expert panels.

  1. Musculoskeletal Expert Panel (the MSK panel) was established in January 2008;
  2. Cataract Expert Panel (the cataract panel) was established in October 2008; and,
  3. Emergency Department Decongestion and Overcrowding Expert Panel (the ED Expert Panel) was established in April 2009.

The purpose of these panels was to explore opportunities on how to reduce provincial wait times and improve access to care for musculoskeletal, cataract and emergency department patients. The panels brought together clinicians such as surgeons, general practitioners, nurses and allied health professionals, as well as administrative experts from across all regional health authorities.

The panels each produced a final report which summarized the panel’s discussions in key areas and provided high-level advice to decision makers.
