Practical Examination

To schedule a practical examination, follow these steps:

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR PCP-IVs:  If you have been notified that you are in IV shortfall and you need to schedule your practical examination, you need to register by the deadline stated in the schedule and complete your examination on or by May 21, 2012.
To register for your exam, follow these steps:

  • Check the practical exam schedule for the four dedicated sessions for IV continuing competence exams.
  • Submit electronically the Practical Examination Scheduling form.

Failing to Attend a Practical Examination

Effective April 16, 2012, clients who do not have an acceptable reason for failing to attend or cancelling (with less than 7 days notice) a scheduled practical examination will be advised that the non-attended examination date will be considered an “attempt” at the exam process.

If you believe that you have a valid reason for not attending your scheduled practical exam, please complete the Request for Exemption for Unattended Practical Examination form within two weeks of being notified of your missed scheduled practical exam and electronically submit to EMA Licensing Branch for review. You will be notified of the branch decision via email.

Important Things to Know

  • If you apply after the deadline for the session you have chosen, you will be automatically waitlisted for any other session you requested as long as the registration deadline for that session has not yet passed.
  • You will only be contacted regarding waitlisted exam sessions if a spot becomes available.
  • You need to choose at least one examination session where the registration deadline has not yet passed; otherwise you will not be scheduled for an examination and you will need to submit a new booking form.

Information about Practical Examination

  • The practical examination evaluates candidates based on real case scenarios and skill tests.
    • Scenarios are simulations of calls a person might attend working as an EMA.
    • Skill tests evaluate a particular skill set such as fracture management, CPR, etc.
  • The practical examination examiners are licensed at the PCP level or higher.
  • You will be given an examination feedback form on the day of your exam.
    • The feedback form will inform you of what went well, what needs improvement, any critical errors and any required remedial examination.

ACP practical examinations are only offered at the Lower Mainland examination centre.

Requesting a review of your evaluation

  • On the day of your exam, you may request a review of your evaluation by the branch clinical advisor if you do not agree with your result.
    • Do this by checking the box at the bottom of your feedback form.
  • If you decide to request a review at a later date, please contact our office.
  • The clinical advisor will contact you to inform you of the outcome of the review and of any changes to the assigned remedial examination.
