Curriculum Review Process
The EMA Licensing Board reviews and approves all new EMA curriculum and all revisions to existing curriculum. Training agencies wishing to get the board’s approval for new or revised curriculum are required to submit all course materials to EMA Licensing Branch for review.
Guidelines for Submissions
- Fill out a checklist indicating where, in the proposed submission, particular requirements are located.
- Highlight substantives changes in the case of a program revision.
- Clearly cross-reference published national and B.C. specific competencies.
- For licence levels without national competency profiles such as FR and EMR, cross-reference each competency in the scope of practice as defined in the EMA Regulation.
- Submit your policies on specific topics such as harassment and student access to records.
Training Programs for PCP and Higher Licence Levels
Before being considered for recognition, all proposed training programs targeted at the PCP level or higher must be accredited or in the process of accreditation by the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) where CMA accreditation processes exist.
Being ‘in the process’ of obtaining CMA accreditation is defined as having made application to the CMA to initiate the accreditation process and be at one of the following four stages:
- Developing a submission within a timeframe acceptable to the EMA Licensing Board;
- Preparing an action plan that must be submitted to the EMA Licensing Board for approval in order to address deficiencies in an incomplete submission;
- Preparing a resubmission; or
- Awaiting feedback from the CMA on a submission.
Interim Program Approval Status
- A program in the process of the CMA accreditation as defined above will be granted interim program approval status.
- An interim program approval status will be valid for the period of time as determined by the EMA Licensing Board.
- During this time, the accreditation application can be considered to be in progress as per the above guidelines.
- A training agency whose application for accreditation is not approved by the CMA must notify the EMA Licensing Board within 30 days.
- A training agency who chooses to withdraw its accreditation application must also notify the EMA Licensing Board within 30 days.
Important Things to Know
- The interim program approval status will be revoked if the training agency fails to achieve accreditation or withdraws from the process.
- Students of a training program without interim or full program approval cannot be accepted for licensing examinations.
