Special Events Preparedness Office (SEPO)

Security at mass gatherings and special events is a continuing concern and the potential for major emergencies with significant health consequence is a real threat.  Given the large number of events scheduled for British Columbia in the coming years, a Special Events Preparedness Office (SEPO) has been created within the Emergency Management Unit (EMU).  SEPO is responsible for the development of strategies to prevent and minimize the health impact and to ensure effective response to emergencies.  SEPO provides a framework within which all health sector partners can participate and optimize Public Health and Health Emergency Management strategies for mass gatherings.

2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games

The Ministry of Health Services (MoHS) is charged with providing strategic leadership, coordination, and oversight to ensure the province meets its health service commitments to the Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC) for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Responsibilities of the MoHS in 2010 preparedness include clarifying roles and responsibilities between health stakeholders, including unique relationships with VANOC and the Integrated Public Safety Unit and relationships across borders with agencies in Alberta and the United States among others. The 2010 Games are not expected to impact on the delivery of regular health services to the residents of British Columbia.

Up-coming major events in BC include:

  • 2008-2009 Pre-Olympic Test events
  • 2009 World Police and Fire Games
  • 2010 Olympics and Paralympics
