Initiatives that Support Healthy Built Environments

  • ActNow BC Seniors’ Community Parks – The province is partnering with local governments to build Seniors’ Community Parks to help older adults stay mobile, physically active and healthy in their communities. The parks will provide specialized equipment designed to improve mobility, coordination and balance. In addition, the parks are also intended to foster social interaction, through associated amenities provided by municipalities, such as walking paths, public art, benches and community gardens.
  • Age-friendly Communities Initiative – A multi-sectoral, community based initiative that provides tools, resources and incentives to local governments and other stakeholders to create a province where all communities have a culture of inclusion shared by all persons of all ages and ability levels. Where policies, services, settings and structures related to the physical and social environment are designed to support and enable older people to “age actively”, that is, to live in security, enjoy good health and continue to participate fully in society.
  • Built Environment and Active Transportation Initiative (BEAT) – BEAT is an initiative of BC Healthy Living Alliance’s physical activity strategy which is led by the BC Recreation and Parks Association and the Union of BC Municipalities. The focus of BEAT is to create more supportive environments for physical activity by addressing community design, policy and transportation planning through the delivery of regional built environment summits and planning grants. The summits bring regions of the province together across the sectors of health, planning and recreation to learn current research and identify priorities. Planning grants are available to communities to develop pathways and active transportation plans. This will result in more connected, active and walkable communities across the province.
  • LiveSmart BC Green Cities Awards Program – These awards profile leading-edge communities and provide them with funds to invest further in initiatives that make their environment even greener and healthier for their citizens. Programs include: Trees for Tomorrow, LocalMotion, Spirit Squares, and Towns for Tomorrow.
