Transition of Hearing Aid Dispensing to the Health Professions Act Repeal of the Hearing Aid Act is provided for in the Health Planning Statutes Amendment Act, 2002. The profession will become regulated under the Health Professions Act along with audiology and speech-language pathology, within a single regulatory college. On December 11, 2008, the government announced that, effective April 1, 2010, the repeal of the Hearing Aid Act will be brought into force and the profession of hearing instrument dispensing (as it will now be known) will be regulated by the new College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals of British Columbia. The Board of Hearing Aid Dealers and Consultants will continue to regulate the profession until April 1, 2010.
Amendments to the Hearing Aid Regulation do not come into force until approved by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. By policy, regulation amendments are subject to a mandatory three-month notice period, unless the Minister specifies a shorter period. The Board is responsible for giving notice of proposed Regulation amendments, including posting them on a public website. Information about any proposed Regulation amendments may be obtained by contacting the Board. Comments on proposed Regulation amendments should be submitted to both the Board and the Ministry.
