Information for Midwives
Midwifery services are a benefit under the B.C. Midwifery Program for eligible British Columbia residents enrolled with the Medical Services Plan (MSP). They are funded by the Ministry of Health.
Midwives in B.C. offer primary health care to healthy pregnant women and their newborn babies from early pregnancy, through labour and birth, and up to six weeks postpartum.
As of April 1, 2012, the Ministry renewed its Midwifery Master Agreement with the Midwives Association of British Columbia (MABC).
This agreement replaces all existing agreements and contracts for Midwifery services funded by MSP.
All new Midwives enrolling with MSP in B.C. will be required to sign a form as part of the registration process.

NEW – MIDWIFERY REFFERALS
Midwives can make referrals to many medical specialists, and directly order many diagnostic procedures and laboratory tests.
All medical services provided by these specialists, resulting from a referral by a midwife, will be processed as per MSP policy.
There are currently 100 different laboratory tests that Midwives may order directly for their patients.
MSP Enrolment and Claims Processing and Payment
Payments for Midwifery services are made through the MSP claims submission and processing system - usually electronically via Teleplan. Midwifery services provided to MSP beneficiaries, when they are out of the province, are not a benefit under the Medical Services Plan.
Health Insurance BC (HIBC) is responsible for enroling Midwives and processing claims. Their on-line information for Health Care Professionals includes:
