Maximum Days' Supply Policy

For short-term drug prescriptions and first-time prescriptions for maintenance drugs, PharmaCare coverage is limited to a maximum 30 days supply.

Short-term medications include all narcotics, all antibiotics, antifungals, sedatives, sleeping pills, barbiturates and all medications in the Palliative Care Formulary.

Maintenance drugs are medications used for long-term conditions, such as diabetes and Parkinson's Disease. The first prescription for a maintenance drug is limited to 30 days to prevent wastage by ensuring that the drug will be effective in treating the condition. Repeat prescriptions of maintenance drugs are covered for a maximum 100 days supply.

Exemptions are available for residents of rural or remote areas without a pharmacy nearby.
