Injury Prevention Initiatives

Initiatives

  • BC Injury Research and Prevention Unit (BCIRPU)
The BC Injury Research and Prevention Unit (BCIRPU) opened its doors in January 1998. The vision of the BCIRPU is to reduce the societal and economic impact of injuries in BC through research, surveillance, education, knowledge transfer, public information, and the support of evidence-based, effective prevention measures.

    The BCIRPU’s activities include:

    • Providing systematic reviews on key injury areas such as motor vehicle collisions, seniors’ fall prevention, and suicide.
    • Developing and disseminating injury prevention best practices to health authorities and other key stakeholders.
    • Supporting health authorities in the development of strategic plans for injury prevention and effective injury reduction programs, such as the seniors’ falls prevention program.
    • Partnering with injury prevention stakeholders in the analysis and reporting of surveillance data to be used for management, program planning, and evaluation purposes.
    • Coordinating the biannual BC Injury Prevention Conference in order to showcase important work in injury prevention from across the province and establish a way forward to reduce the burden of injuries in BC.

  • The Community Against Preventable Injuries
In May 2006, The Community Against Preventable Injuries (the Community) was launched. The Community is a registered not-for-profit organization, operating at arm’s length from government. This partnership involves British Columbian businesses, government, and non-profit organizations. The Community’s objective is to dramatically reduce the number of preventable injuries in the province through the delivery of a social marketing campaign that began on June 2, 2009.

Injury Prevention Coalitions

  • BC Injury Prevention Leadership and Action Network (BCiPLAN)
The provincial government supports the BC Injury Prevention Leadership and Action Network (BCiPLAN), an independent strategic alliance of organizations involved in injury prevention. The role of the BCIPLAN is to identify injury prevention priorities and coordinate activities that address significant injury issues facing all age groups in BC. The BCiPLAN membership has representation from across ministries, the six BC health authorities, Health Canada, Public Health Agency of Canada, Insurance Corporation of BC, RCMP, municipalities, community groups, and other key stakeholder organizations.

  • BC Sport and Recreation Injury-Free Advisory Committee
The provincial government supports the BC Sport and Recreation Injury-Free Advisory Committee (BCSRIFAC), which provides a forum for organizations and individuals involved in sport and recreation injury awareness and prevention in order to advise and assist one another through independent and collaborative activities directed towards reducing or preventing sport and recreation injuries. BCSRIFAC also:

    • Identifies sport and recreation injury prevention priorities where evidence supports that progress can be made in injury reduction.
    • Serves in a consultative capacity to the provincial government in respect to the expansion of SPORTSafe and other sport injury prevention and reduction strategies.
    • Identifies opportunities and participates in strategic collaborative activities as and when appropriate.
    • Informs other strategies related to the prevention and reduction of sport and recreation injuries in BC.
    • Shares information and work collaboratively on strategies to prevent and reduce sport and recreation injuries in BC.

Education and Capacity Building

  • Canadian Injury Prevention and Control Curriculum (CIPCC)
The Canadian Injury Prevention and Control Curriculum (CIPCC) is a unique resource focused on injury prevention and control theory and practice. The CIPCC is exclusive in that it is the first curriculum of its kind focused on injury prevention and control theory, targeted to community-based practitioners. It is a resource that is built on Canadian content and uses real Canadian examples to illustrate concepts.
