Land Use and Onsite Sewage
The Ministry of Health (Health Protection Branch) provides policy support for land use management, which includes both onsite sewage disposal and subdivision activities. The fundamental goal is to ensure potential risks to human health are minimized, mitigated and/or prevented. This is achieved through legislative requirements, supporting policies and guidelines.
The legislative authority governing onsite sewage and subdivisions is pursuant to the Sewerage System Regulation and Subdivision Regulations respectively. The term “sewerage system,” used in the context of the regulation, refers to the system of pipes, pumps and other equipment used for the collection, transport and disposal of wastewater. “Sewage” refers to the wastewater itself.
The Ministry of Health provides guidance to the general public, health authorities, industry and other provincial ministries regarding these land use initiatives, which include:
- The health implications and appropriate management of solid and liquid onsite waste disposal.
- Human health risk management of land and resource development activities.
- Public health issues related to the subdivision assessment processes.
In addition, the Ministry of Health is committed to providing timely updates regarding new policies, interpretation of guidelines, and other initiatives associated with land use and onsite sewage. Individuals interested in receiving notification of these updates can sign up for the Land Use and Onsite Sewage e-mail notification service.
