How Do I Apply for a D or E Licence?

Click here to see a diagram illustrating the licence application process.

Designated Areas: D and E Licences

If you are in a designated area, you can apply for a Class D or E licence. You do not need to complete a Class E feasibility study. (If you are in a nondesignated area, you can only proceed with these steps if your Class E feasibility study has been approved - see below)

To apply for a D or E licence, you must complete these steps:

  1. Register for and complete the SlaughterSafe training course.
  2. Complete a food safety plan for your farm.
  3. Complete a site assessment with your regional health authority.
  4. Complete a Class D/E application form (PDF  32K)
  5. Submit your application package to your regional health authority.

Please note that you should complete steps 2 through 5 during and after you have completed SlaughterSafe training!

Information about how to submit your application package will be provided to you during the SlaughterSafe course. If your application package is complete and approved by your regional health authority, they will issue your Class D or E licence.

For more information about applying for a licence, please contact your regional health authority.

Nondesignated Areas: Class E Licences Only

If you are in a nondesignated area, you are only eligible to apply for a Class E licence. Applications in nondesignated areas will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and licences will be issued based on a proven need for additional slaughter capacity or services.

In nondesignated areas, the first step in the licence application process is to complete a Class E feasibility study and submit it to the Class E Feasibility Study Provincial Coordinator for review and approval. A feasibility study is not required in designated areas.

Class E Feasibility Study (PDF 216K)

A number of resources have been developed to help you complete your feasibility study.

You will be notified in writing whether your feasibility study is or is not approved. If your feasibility study is approved, you can apply for a Class E licence and proceed by completing the steps described above for designated areas.

If your feasibility study is not approved, you cannot apply for an E licence and are not eligible to register for SlaughterSafe training.
