Health Status

Health Status is a measure of the health and well-being of individuals and populations, and is assessed using a variety of health indicators. Health status indicators include subjective assessments, such as the perception of one's own health or the proportion of people reporting one or more health problems in surveys, and objective indicators including mortality, hospital mortality, and non-hospital mortality (Shah, 1998).

The Office of the Provincial Health Officer in British Columbia keeps track of a number of health indicators and reports on them in annual and special reports. Examples of these health indicators include:

  • self-rated health
  • disability days
  • overweight
  • infant mortality
  • potential years of life lost
  • life expectancy
