Active Aging in B.C.

The health and well-being of B.C.’s older people (age 65 and older) is a vital resource to individuals, families, communities and society.

With an aging population in British Columbia, there is an increasingly urgent need to prepare our communities through adaptations that benefit older people’s health. By 2031 nearly 25% of our provincial population will be older people. The Ministry of Health is leading the way to promote public planning that will enable older people to keep healthy, active and independent, and continue to contribute their skills, knowledge and experience to society.

Many older people in B.C. have more than one chronic health condition. However, illness, disability and loss of independence are not inevitable consequences of aging. Much can be done through healthy living to prevent, minimize, or even reverse frailty and poor health in older age. As well as supporting a better quality of life for older people, active aging can also help with savings to the health care system.
