Research and Surveillance
A number of tobacco surveys provide information on tobacco use in British Columbia. Note: As surveys differ in sample size and reporting periods, the resulting smoking statistics will not be the same in each survey. However, each survey serves a purpose, as they show trends in tobacco practices and provide information on a range of tobacco issues.
- Canadian Tobacco Use Monitoring Survey (CTUMS) - provides national and provincial tobacco use rates from 1999 to present
- Tobacco Attitudes and Behaviours Survey (TABS) - this BC Stats survey tracked attitudes and tobacco use rates provincially and in all health authorities.
- Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) - this Statistics Canada survey tracks national, provincial and health service delivery area tobacco use rates
- Youth Smoking Survey - monitors tobacco use in Canadian school aged children (Grades 5 to 12).
- Smoking Prevalence in BC 2003 (PDF 921K) - an Ipsos-Reid survey based on a total of 2,900 telephone interviews with British Columbians aged 15 years and older
- Youth Access To Tobacco Project: Final Report (PDF 1.6M) - Ministry of Health and Health Canada, August 2005
- Tobacco Use in BC 1997 - This survey of 18,000 British Columbia residents sought to determine the prevalence of tobacco use and the socio-demographic characteristics of those who use tobacco.
- Health Canada, Wholesale Sale Data - Since 2001 tobacco companies have been required by federal law to provide annual reports to Health Canada of their wholesale sales of cigarettes, domestic and imported, and fine cut tobacco. These reports are available nationally and provincially for wholesale tobacco sales since 1980.
