TOBACCO-FREE: Trial Team Biographies

A former British Columbia Supreme Court justice and one of British Columbia's oldest law firms are conducting the Province's lawsuit against the Canadian tobacco industry.

The lawsuit is being handled by the Province's legal team headed by Thomas Berger, Q.C, Order of Canada, and Daniel Webster, Q.C. of the Vancouver-based law firm Bull, Housser and Tupper.

The following are the senior members of the legal team for B.C.'s Tobacco Lawsuit:

Thomas R. Berger, Q.C., Order of Canada: A B.C. Supreme Court justice for 12 years and a recipient of the Order of Canada, Berger has earned a national and international reputation for his pursuit of justice in the areas of human rights and the environment. In addition to his involvement in constitutional and Charter issues, Berger has recently argued successfully on behalf of plaintiffs in the Supreme Court of Canada in cases on causation in the law of torts.

Daniel A. Webster, Q.C.: A partner and senior counsel at Bull, Housser and Tupper, Webster has focused on tort litigation, including personal injury and wrongful death, health care litigation and products liability claims. He has considerable experience in the use of medical and scientific evidence, causation issues and the assessment of damages.
