About Us
The Healthy Women, Children and Youth Secretariat (Secretariat) was established in 2008 within the Population and Public Health Division of the Ministry of Health.
The purpose of the Secretariat is to support and advance the health and well being of women, children and youth in British Columbia through policy and program development by working in collaboration with other government ministries, organizations and stakeholders.
The following definition of health provided by the United Nations Declaration and Platform for Action (Beijing, 1995) guides the work of the Secretariat:
Health is "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Women's health involves their emotional, social and physical well-being and is determined by the social, political and economic context of their lives, as well as by biology".
Examples of our activities include:
- Developing and coordinating policy related to women's issues, women's health (including maternal health), and children's and youth's health;
- Collaborating with other Ministries, health authorities, not-for-profit agencies, municipalities and businesses to advance women's, maternal and children's health and well-being initiatives;
- Partnering and collaborating with other levels of government to ensure that the interests of British Columbia women are represented and advanced at the local, national and international level.
