To overcome the challenges of working
in remote communities, the Produce
Availability Initiative team supported
communities by providing funding for
materials and equipment, enlisting a
dedicated garden coordinator from within
the community, and providing access
to horticulturalists and their valuable
knowledge and skills.
It didn’t take long for
communities to get growing;
earth was tilled, beds
were built, and seeds were
sown. Soon gardens were
sprouting up in vacant lots,
backyards, and sturdy new
greenhouses. Chickens
moved into their new coops
and fruit trees took root.
“Local families and visitors to the
garden this weekend commented
on the beauty and success of our
space. It truly is a wonderful place,
and all the people involved in our
garden are part of this positive,
healthy, remarkable growing spot
of community spirit.”
